The proposed image shows Alfa without filter as produced in the 80's. Generally considered the worst Italian cigarettes, Alfa had a dark and low-quality tobacco, in which it was not so rare to find dust and pieces of wood. Very rich of tar, Alfa were appreciated by those ancient smokers who looked for a tasty cigarette at a low price. In the period in which "Nazionali Semplici", i.e. Nationals without filter were difficult to find as part of the "Mobile Scale Basket" established by Italian governments, Alfa were a very popular alternative, even if of lower quality. The golden lion with the shield, introduced at the end of '70s to substitute gradually the well known sailing ship, represents the old symbol of Italian "Monopoli di Stato" (acronym: MS), the national tobacco industry. The white triangle on red background substituted in 80's the red Greek "alpha" painted on a white package, that was this brand's symbol in the 70's.
As it happened to similar brands like Super and Nazionali, Alfa package is no more available in the short size. From 90's begin, it has been substituted by long package King Size.

Very popular in Italy, Nazionali Esportazione are prepared with a finer tobacco respect to the "Nazionali Semplici" version. That is why, from 60's to today, a sailing ship is reproduced on the envelope green-coloured paper. Very rich of tar and nicotine, Nazionali Esportazione can be considered a concurrent to the French Caporal cigarettes like Gitanes and Gauloises, respect to which they are less expensive. From 90's, the Nazionali Esportazione short size (without filter in green package, with filter in white package) is no more available, what has brought to the suppression of "N.E. Lunghe", i.e. "Nazionali Esportazione Lunghe" that were very diffused during 70's.

Probably the most peculiar French cigarette all over the world, Gitanes Papier Mais cannot be confused with other brands as their paper is yellow like corn leaves, from which it derives. This feature gives the cigarette an excellent, strong male taste, which pleasure increases thanks to the slow combustion to which its paper is subjcted. European Community rules have imposed to decrease the tar and nicotine content of all the cigarettes, what has smoothed the characteristic strength of Gitanes Papier Mais. Not available in all countries, e.g. Italy where it has been never sold.

This is the typical package of "Nazionali Filtro" produced for more than 20 years, from '60s to '80s. The corresponding version without filter, package white and blue, called in Italy "Nazionali Semplici" (Simple Nationals), was part of the "Mobile Scale Basket". In other words, the Nazionali were taken together with other products of popular consumption to measure the inflation index. That's why, for a long period, "Nazionali Semplici" were sold at a very low price (200 lire each package in the '80s, about 10 modern Euro cents), that could increase only if the inflation index was increasing too. Despite they were very cheap and very difficult to be found at the tobacconists', "Nazionali semplici" were very appreciated due to their tasty, strong, brown tobacco similar to French Caporal. As a consequence of the negative advertisement to tobacco, "Nazionali semplici" were removed from the Basket in the '90s and their price grew consequently.
The proposed image shows a typical "Nazionali Filtro" package of '70s. Sold in an economic package without cellophane, the golden ship painted on the envelope paper represents the old symbol of Italian "Monopoli di Stato", i.e. the Italian national industry of tobacco. The "Nazionali Filtro" filter was very cheap, not particularly effective and simply made with rolled paper, as well as for other Italian cigarettes belonging to the cheapest range of tobacco market (e.g. Super Filter, Stop Filter, Alfa Filter etc.).
