Eduard Laurens was a tobacco manufacturer in The Hague, The Netherlands. Its main brand was Caballero. Laurens cigarettes were sold in tins during the 40's and 50's, containing 200 cigarettes.

It had a Belgian branch at Brussels. Belgian packages (and tins) were blue, while the Dutch were yellow.

Olavtenbroek: Holland's best selling sigarette for decades

Caballero was produced by Ed. Laurens in The Hague (in fact a suburb of The Hague named Rijswijk) in The Netherlands. For a long period, Caballero was by far Holland's best selling domestic cigarette.

It was a full-flavour cigarette, a little thicker than normal, with a lovely smell of high-quality tobacco with a taste of liquorice to it. One could always recognize the smell apart from other brands.

During the seventies, a rumour was spread that Caballero contained a very low dosis of Cocaine, wich off course was never proved by anyone. Fact was that people who usually smoked Caballero, never changed their brand. This could off course also be caused by the specific taste and smell.

Ed. Laurens produced also a smaller brand, named Laurens #14.

Olavtenbroek: A windforce 12 cigarette!

Black Beauty was a cigarette manufactured by Theodorus Niemeyer in Groningen, the Netherlands. It contended very dark tobacco and for this reason it was the first cigarette in Holland with a "warning" on the wrap, with "4 points out of 4" wich meant very high tar and nicotine content.

For unexperienced smokers inhaling this cigarette felt like a strike on the chest. However, in Holland also very dark tobacco was sold in packages for self-rolling, like "Zware Van Nelle", "Brandaris" and "Javaansche Jongens". Especially outdoors people and seamen liked these very heavy tobaccos, as the only way to taste something in rough weather outdoors or at sea.

I sometimes used these Black Beauty cigarettes to impress the boys at school, because taking one was always the last time they asked me for a smoke!
