Brand The Scarlet Camellia

The case of China illustrates the enormous potential market represented by women in developing countries. In China, it is still primarily men who smoke, and they account for thirty per cent of the world market with an average of ten cigarettes per day, the same rate as in the U.S. during the 1950s. "The Scarlet Camellia", shown to the right, is a brand manufactured in China, king size (85 mm), 20 cigarettes in a pack, hard and soft pack. Based on the experience of the industrial world, it can be expected that total consumption will increase and that women will catch up with men, unless radical measures are taken. At present, only four per cent of Chinese women smoke. The most valuable preventive measure that the international community can take in the battle against the global tobacco epidemic is to ensure that the industrial world's pattern of tobacco use is not repeated in China.
