Benson & Hedges U.K. {Gallaher}

Benson & Hedges was founded on Old Bond Street, London, in 1873 by partners Richard Benson and William Hedges. The new company had the patronage of the Prince of Wales (who would ascend the throne as King Edward VII in 1901), who gave them a Royal Warrant in 1878, an honour which they kept until it was withdrawn (due to lack of demand in the royal households) in 1999. As well, the company was among the first not to sell tobacco loosely by weight, but rather to sell it in sealed tins to ensure freshness. Hedges' son, Alfred Paget, stepped into the company when partner Richard Benson departed in 1885.

The company expanded overseas during the turn of the last century; however, the subsidiaries drifted apart from the mother company over time, and would end up being sold off to differing owners. The United Kingdom branch of Benson and Hedges was sold to Gallaher in 1955. The most familiar Benson and Hedges brand is undoubtedly Special Filter, which was launched in the late 1950's/early 1960's, and was well advertised, first in the 'Pure Gold' ads of the 1960's and 1970's, and the abstract ads that were used in print and cinemas during the 1970's and 1980's. Benson & Hedges Special Filter was renamed Gold in the 2000's.
